Creation of a Comprehensive Health Profile of Children in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and Development of Intra-Provincial Population-Based Birth Cohorts

1. Goal of the Proposed Quick Strike II Project

Consistent with preliminary work by our research team, the proposed project aims to identify and evaluate selected administrative data from NB and from PEI to create two independent provincial birth cohorts which will be used to establish the health profile of children (18 months), and to enable longitudinal monitoring of infant and child health at regular intervals. To this end, the NB and PEI birth cohort databases will provide a valuable resource for various stakeholders to monitor and report on child health over the long-term, and to evaluate current practices and future health interventions to establish evidence informed primary prevention strategies.

Proposed Objectives

  1. To produce provincial-level children health profiles based on administrative data available in NB and PEI and on the needs expressed by knowledge users;

  2. To develop a system for intra-sector data sharing and database integration across departments in each Province;

  3. Using this system to create population-based birth cohorts, one in NB, one in PEI, using administrative datasets available in each Province.
